Coinciding with issue 10 going up, my trusty ole' pal the VX1000 decided to stop working. Bummed. The good news is: it was very productive in the weeks leading up to it's demise, so the content won't cease just yet, but just say'n.

It may be time to get one of those DSLR jawns that are so popular today, but I'm not counting the VX out altogether just yet...

While the fire still burns in the mountains surrounding the Los Alamos area, a few weeks ago, BZ skateshop held it's second annual skate contest at the Los Alamos park. I was surprised it wasn't cancelled, as the entire community was evacuated in the weeks earlier. It was a monumental event in the sense that my son Jaxxon entered, and won his first skate contest. He was stoked! A big thanks to Pat and the BZ squad for bringing and event like this to Northern New Mexico. I didn't have a lot of time to film, as I was parenting my two children, but, here is what I got... J.D. Palmer, Travis Waller, and Monico Candelaria with tunes by Jimi.

With not much but winter conditions up my way, the boys down in Albuquerque have been traveling and braving the cold to get some sessions in. Johnny Gomez and friends have been documenting the progress on a new project called Footy Party HERE. Some nice photos and laughs on there.

New issue of Broketape coming? Prob'ly.

No year end best-of lists here, we want to look forward, not backward, so with a little help from a stoned imagination here are a few 2011 predictions:

- Leading HD camera manufacturers will embrace a 4:3 HD format to, "ya know, get the fisheye right."

- The larger (corporate) skateboard companies take a page from Krooked and start making an effort to put out videos of skaters actually skating around with other skaters instead of sitting at some spot for 3 hours while one guy tries a trick.

- The one-man web video reaches its peak as Alex Olson styles out an all LA/NYC clip set to the sounds of The Rapture's classic track "Olio."

- One of the REAL guys ends up SOTY.

- The taboo of "park footy" is officially lifted.

- This site can muster at least a post every month. Fingers crossed.

It was a miserable day weather wise... but, the park has the "goods," so the boys came through with some ripping. Ben Woosley, AKA "Mr. New Mexico," is pretty epic. I first got the chance to film him as he was re-entering the world of skateboarding after his stint as a competitive body-builder. Little did I know I was making a life-long friend. I had seen Ben skate once, years before moving back to New Mexico, but it was years after returning that I saw him skate again. I'd describe him on a skateboard as; powerful, skilled and a bit cavalier in his approach. He lives in Cali now, working a professional day job and... leading a double life as a "greenroom" skate junkie, hell bent on stacking the footage. Well, he and a bunch of other homies from the LA/East LA scene have been working on a video. That video is TOASTED, and the line-up is stacked with Broketape fave's like, DJ Chavez, and James Juarez! The video drops in October... have your shop cop that shit!

Daniel Lutheran is riding the wave of "up-and-coming" reef in the sea of "Skateboard Industry." He's currently living in Long Beach; touring, demoing, accruing sponsorships and most importantly: filming a debut video part for Toy. I can't wait! But, sometimes what you need most is a home cooked meal. So, ya head home for some family time.

For months now I've been trying to spread the word about the skatepark in Española, New Mexico. The response is usually something like, "Española?" Yep!

It's somewhat of a late '90's "X-Games" set up with large metal ramps set up in a back and forth manner... and super fun in my humble opinion. But on this, the first day of summer,.. really fuckin' HOT. Hot like a stove. But, Johnny Gomez and Neil Shanklin gave it a go nonetheless... So, for all the homies who wanted to see what the hell I've been spitting about, here it is. Go skate day footage. Enjoy.

Sometimes murking on a mission with no set plan is the best plan of action. I drunkenly stumbled onto a whole crop of good times last weekend in Albuquerque. I witnessed the local video premier of Nothing Special (which ripped, from what I remember.) Partied with locals, up-and-coming ams and a top Pro. Filmed (re-filmed) a serious banger, and throughout the entire ride I was meeting new friends or re-connecting with old ones. Good looks, I hope to see you all again real soon. Au revoir!

Last week the wife and I got outta "Dodge," and headed down to Albuquerque for some much needed R&R and Spring-like weather. I made a point to bring both board and camera along. Saturday, I bombed some hills solo before meeting up with Neil "Skud" Shanklin and Xander Rentz at Ceebs. I was sucking wind on the filming tip... I think I made them do each trick like three times, it was really bad as you will see. Thanks for putting up with me fellas.

I just did some spring cleaning to the HOMIES section, or the links if you wanna be a dick about it. In there you will find some newish New Mexico skate sites... big ups to all the "around the way" blog doggs. I added some big name camera men whom keep the content coming and inspiration flowing. And last, but not least, the pot calling the kettle black. I always hated the term "throwaway footage"... if your using it, you didn't throw it away, right? Anyway, I offer kudos to this somewhat controversial take on the skateboard media outlets. Cheers! Here's to Spring.

Have you ever seen the Fellini film 8 1/2? Ever heard the Black Flag record "Who's got the 10 1/2?" Did you know I've been trying to complete a full-length skate video for over ten years now? Well, my answer is YES! And now I am pleased to say that I plan to roll all the above, plus a plethora of additional influences into what will become the Broketape.com full-lenth video. The only thing that's certain at this point is the title, and that I am committed to making it a reality.

I recently dusted of the 'ole VX1000 and headed to Albuquerque to get started filming. It had been awhile so I was a bit rusty, but with the help of local rippers Andrew Torralvo, Jermaine, Charles Fletcher, Derek Prada and Xander Rentz, I got my "filming legs" going. So, things are underway... updates to follow as we move forward into Spring.

Additionally, have you see cha' boy Dan Lu's New Jack in the latest Skateboard Mag? Check it if haven't yet.

Lastly, I had a nice long "chat" with Tyler Franz, who is recovering from injury at home in Michigan. He assures me he's ready to get back to the Southwest upon recovery, and is down to film "bangers" for the video... great news huh?

Last Wednesday I spent a few hours hanging with my pal Dan Lutheran. We skated and filmed a little before taking refuge from the incoming storm at the Dion's pizza across from the "new park." As those Dion's sessions tend to go, we got to talking skateboarding etc., and I recalled the RVCA demo in Santa Fe. I'd all but forgot this footage I shot of the bro's. Greetings in the new decade friends. I have a couple of bitchin' links to share. I'm sure they are old news to most, but whateves they f@#&in' rule... firstly, THIS old gem from Greg Hunt made me smile ear to ear, not only because of the stellar vintage Ethan Fowler footy, but also for the great clips of Robert DeNiro in his role as Rupert Pupkin from The King of Comedy, a classic film you should see if you haven't. Super fun and weird, just how I like it. Secondly, yesterday the skate web was saturated with the Machtaildrop movie trailer... rightly so. This movie looks beyond epic in every way. Like every good thing about a Wes Anderson or Coen Brothers movie rolled tightly with credible skate personalities old and new and is based on skateboarding... genius! THIS is in the same vein and also looks tasty... and THIS.

The first issue of Broketape took over a year, with umpteen edits and various music choices. Finally, after I moved to Taos ... two hours from the skate scene I was dedicated to covering, things finally got moving.

In issues Two and Three, new parks were opening up, new friends were being made, and the guard of the Albuquerque scene seemed to be changing. As exciting as it was, this period of time was bitter-sweet. I gained more experience as a father ... and another child, yet lost my Mother. Looking back on it now, these are some of the best clips because of all the stuff that was going on. I submerged myself in this project as a way to deal with life. I'm really glad I had this outlet.

On the eve prior to heading East, I met up with my long time co-hort, and fellow skate lensman, Johnny Gomez. During the few hours we had to catch up, he proceeded to blow my mind with his future plans and even more so with the footage stockpile he was sitting on. When he announced "here is a Broketape edit I have done and ready... you'll love the song." I about shit myself. I sat and watched in amazement.

So, the good news is, there is a new issue about to drop. The bad news is Johnny is moving to Arizona for the winter, which isn't really bad news, as it is only a bummer for me because he won't be in Albuquerque. In honor of our good friend and his new adventure, here are a few warm-up clips from last weeks meet-up in Santa Fe. We're gonna miss ya buddy. Let me know when you have a floor to crash on.

After Haveboard and I returned to the "Command Center" from Pop's, we quickly gathered up what added gear would be needed for NYC and hit the "Chinatown" bus, Brooklyn bound. It was raining. We were hungry and thirsty, but we skipped the food and hit the bar running. Shots and beers, shots and beers. Needless to say, looooong night. Woke to more rain. We grub and head straight to the Autumn bowl for the Brent Atchley best trick jawn. The scene was already set: dark, crowded, loud (metal/punk bands), and beer soaked (free Asahi!) ... seemed like a great way to spend a rainy Sunday. I lurked and watched for a good while contemplating how the fuck to film anything in the madness/darkness. But, soon the rippers started really ripping, and I had lugged the camera all this way, so what the hell, right?! Brent, our host, was killing it smoothly, Andrew Langi was flying high, Kyle Berard seemed to dip in and out always laying out 6 to 10 tricks, but Dan Carrerio skated ALL damn day! He was all over the place. Loose and wild. It was sick! Well deserved money for third. Langi turned it way up to land second place. And Berard ripped like he always does, first place.

My ears are still ringing!

A huge thanks to Haveboard for coming through with the additional HD flip jawns in the edit. Good looks to Matt and Sabah for the futon space. To Philthy and Skinny, rock on bretheren! ... holla if a skate mission ever brings you to New Mex. And lastly a giant FUCK YOU! to the coward bastard who walked off with my board. As it happens, when you travel great distances, new perspectives seem to open up like spring flowers in bloom. This was the case for me as I ventured out to the skateparks of Philadelphia. First stop, FDR. Upon securing a new plank, thanks to "Dem Noc Boyz" down at Nocturnal, I found that between the travel wear n' tear and previous nights bike ride shenanigans, I was unfit to push swiftly though the city streets ... the 50mm wheels weren't helping me either! By the time we reached FDR, all I had in me was strength to pop open a tall can and gaze around in amazement. Quite a monster they have down there. We skated and filmed a little. Haveboard nailed his line with the help of Gonzo's "got cho' back grabber", the local lurk's "goonface", and round 2 props from Tito "Hard Times." We hit it back to have Matt cook the kill "grill" grub.

The next day, after a long lazy day, Haver's and I headed over to Pop's park. By the time we got there, we only had a little time to really skate before the rain started. I quickly shoved the camera in the face of a couple locals, Jake Hanitschak & Jay Klotz, in effort to bring you at least a taste ... so, pardon the lack of clips. The park is fun for sure, and noteable shredders at the session: Wagner on his loooooooooong street set-up, and Barker fuckin Barrett! His 5-0 to fakie alone was worth the trip over.

In effort to make some sort of a blog post, I am here to tell you that I am off, armed to the gills in video/photo equipment, for Philly. Haver's and I will be micro-blogging, ya know Twitter'n, throughout. Working on all kinds of other stuff for the site too. Really!

Say what you will about Mayor Martin Chavez, but as a skateboarder, I say - "FUCK YEAH!" Now clocking in with six skateparks throughout the city, Albuquerque is killing it. The latest is another stab at the 1/2 concrete, 1/2 Skatewave concept. Although to be fair, it is mostly concrete. Most everyone I talked to has admitted to spending "all Summer here." It's fun to say the least, so without further a-dooo, here is Tyler Franz, Monico Candelaria, Neil Shanklin, and a brief appearance by Xander Rentz in what is known as the "new park." There is a reason the skateboard world seems to rotate around "So. Cal." The weather kills it, the School yards are a plenty, and it seems everywhere you look there is a spot or someone is skating. Upon this trip out to the promised land I had the pleasure of hanging/skating with DJ Chavez, Lizard King, J-Roy, Sebo Walker, Yoon Sul, and my boy "Benny Lee" AKA "Mr. New Mexico." Ben is always down to come to Venice and hang tough. I think it has something to do with the bodybuilding/skate history ... who knows. Anyway, he killed it. Mark Gonzales rules it so hard ... always has. From Video Days to the recent Day in the Life (link), watching him is always entertaining and unique. I recently dusted of my copy of the Krooked video masterpiece Gnar Gnar and wanted to share a few observations. Raddest line-up ever. Van Wastell looked so damn natural on a skateboard. Sometimes just pushing down the street can be sick to watch. Technology don't mean shit when it comes to making good skate videos. You should listen to New Order!

Summertime is upon us and so far is looking real tasty. We've been sussing-out new spots and parks. We've logged the first clips for the new issue. And best of all, we have new equipment driving the pixels straight to your sun-burnt face. Get ready 'cause things should start bubblin' 'round here. Much like the Steve Zissou character in Wes Anderson's The Life Aquatic with Steve Zissou, I have lost my best friend. You see, my local skatepark was shut-down due to insurance issues. Sadly, it's virtually the only spot in town that isn't a bust...or with smooth ground for that matter. Matched with the week plus of rain/wind... Skating? Forget it. Finding myself with plenty of "spare" time and some emails letting me know I hadn't updated in a while, I dug up what remaining footage/super-8/alt. edits hadn't seen daylight and put them to a track from the movie's score. "Now if you'll excuse me, I'm going to go on an overnight drunk, and in 10 days I'm going to set out to find the shark that ate my friend and destroy it. Anyone who wants to tag along is more than welcome."

Ah, yes. The contest post, not really, but I did want to mention the ALL NATIONS SKATE JAM. It seemed like a pretty cool event. The HUSH RIOT represented, as did the Alva Posse. Now live ISSUE 7! We took a dose of '84 SK8/DYI and mixed it with some blazing '09 footage and bang! Bomb-drops over rails, street plants with wall-rides and screamin' wall-rides with grabs out! Super-fun times Saturday night as Albuquerque played host to the Altamont tour and the skate-rock stylings of The Goat, and Broketape fave, NO AGE. In true skate-rat form, Johnny and I skated through the downtown streets to the show. Fun. The Tum Yeto fellas were also in town, so we had skate stars, elite members of the skate paparazzi, locals and random hipsters all mingling loosely together. Beers appeared out of nowhere as did a pit of sweaty moshing(?)... a sight I hadn't seen in a while. Long live skate-rock. Sunday we got down to biz. New issue coming soon.

There hasn't been much going on here. The weather has been hit or miss and I live hours away from the people I generally film with. I have been working on the edit of the next issue ...no promises on when it will be done, but I should be sending the super 8 reels off next week, which is typically one of the last steps. So, soon. Here is the edit I did sometime ago that was supposed to be the first post when the site launched. Due to my antsy nature, I posted it on my portfolio site a few months ago instead. Sorry to those who have see it already. Shot in an afternoon, my buddy Dean Pogni had just landed in Albuquerque and I was showing him around. We met up with Xander Rentz and crew at a spot then took it down to "Ceebs," where Ian Preut was slaying the park. No bangers but we had a blast and it all fit perfectly to the Barney Miller score. There are many exciting things happening in the New Mexico skate scene right about now... the MAG° minute(s?), the HUSH RIOT producing sick boards (with a promo in the works) and sick homegrown videos like Johnny Gomez's HAVE LOVE WILL TRAVEL. I'm not going to get into part run-downs or comments on editing or any of that shit, in my humble opinion, every part was good and the edit was top-notch. What I do want to say is, the growth from Fresh to this is amazing. Job well done to Johnny and everyone involved. Fun times were had at the premier.

Total creep, good friend and great photographer, Isaac McKay-Randozzi, has given his web portal a little boob-job. MY DUMB LUCK is the spot, head over and take some clicks around. As happens with nearly everything in life, things get lost or forgotten in the shuffle. Long faded away in the recesses of time, or in this case, an old shoe box. The story behind this forgotten Super 8 roll, is that it was REALLY old film stock. So old, that there was, as I was told, only one place available to develop and transfer it's contents...in Canada. Needless to say, it was a long and expensive undertaking. This footage from a LOWCARD BBQ at 3rd and Army in San Francisco was slated to go with the corresponding video that you may have seen in Issue 5. But, by the time it came back in the mail, the edit was done. Also, it seems to shift between color an B&W due to the nature of the old film stock. Anyway, I dug it up the other day and with some much invested, why not? Skaters/etc. are Rob Collinson, Dean Pogni, Peter Ramondetta, Benny Gold and Elias Bingham. Music by The Melvins, "Hide."

Long time contributor and Broketape BFF, Johnny Gomez, will be premiering his NEW video, HAVE LOVE WILL TRAVEL, Friday, February 27th, 7PM at the new 4D's location (Wyoming @ Paseo). With parts from some of my fave New Mexico rippers, I'm excited to see what "Rubicon" has up those flannel sleeves for this one. Five bones at the door. Be there or be square mugs! A few weeks ago while filming with the crew at the Cibola High School handrails, we found ourselves in a altercation with first the janitor, then the school's principal. Luckily, Daniel got his line just as she was alerting the police. We fled and took refuge at the skatepark directly adjacent to the school, affectionately dubbed "Ceebs." We had a good session and I was asked to film some stuff. I was tired but reluctantly pulled out the camera. Here is what I got. No fancy camera settings or angles...just a few fun clips. The highlight of working on Broketape in 2008 was making my way to San Francisco to meet up with the LOWCARD crew for the Chili Bowl shindig. The new park is incredible and there was an electric vibe all day. Watching the crop of young rippers like Tyler Mumma, Raven Tershay, and Robbie Russo kill the place was truly thrilling. I reached way back into the fridge for the leftovers and seconds from that day. Enjoy.
